Abstract Themes of Hadith Sciences in Imam Shafi'i'sAr-Resalah: A Study and Analysis by: Sajida R. M. Awawdah Supervised by: Dr. Saeed A. Al-Qazaqi Imam Shafi'i's book, Ar-Resalah, is the first book on fundamentals of figh [Islamic jurisprudence] as well as the first and the most important piece of writing about the sciences of Prophet Mohammad's (PBUH) Hadiths. Nevertheless, this book has never received a due attention; the researcher could not find any printed commentary for this book. The fact that no one has ever collected and analyzed the contents of this book in one independent book prompted the researcher to collect the topics of the book and study them thoroughly. The first chapter of this study (an introduction) introduces a personal and scientific biography of the Imam al-Shafi'i. In addition to examining the valuables included in the book and explaining its importance, this chapter also reflects on the sciences of Hadith which were popular in the time of Imam al-Shafi'i. This chapter also explores the topics discussed by Imam al-Shafi'i in his book. The second chapter is concerned with al-Shafi's classification of the Maqbul and Mardud [accepted and rejected] Hadith. The third chapter touches on ilal [defects] of Hadith as viewed by Imam al-Shafei. The fourth chapter is devoted to Khabar-al-Wahid [a single person’s report] as this type of Hadith is given a great attention by Imam al-Shafi'i. This chapter also sheds light on Imam al-Shafi'i's argument and terms related to his acceptance of Khabar-al-Wahid Hadith. The study concludes with the most important findings of this research: 1. In his book, Imam al-Shafi'i does not cover all the Hadith topics and terminology, but rather he deals with the key ones. 2. This study has found that Hadith scholars and experts agree and disagree with Imam al-Shafi'i on many Hadith issues. 3. Imam al-Shafi'i does not classify Hadith into Mutawatir [continuously recurrent] and Ahaad [solitary hadith], but rather he divides it into Khabar al-Ammah [common report] and Khabar al-Khassah[specialized report]. 4. Imam al-Shafi'i disagrees with some scholars regarding the issue of Naskh [abrogation]. He argues that the Sunnah, especially Hadith types ofMutawatir and Ahaad, does not abrogate the Qur'an, provided that the Naskh can be substituted. He also contradicts other scholars regarding the issue that the Qur'an does not abrogate the Sunnah unless there is another Sunnah which confirms the occurrence of Naskh.
