Abstract The present study addresses the social and economic conditions in Jerusalem during 1700-1725. It draws on the records of the Jerusalem Islamic Court as a key source of data which is not available in published and printed books. The significance of the study stems from the fact that the era under study has never been thoroughly researched before. That era began with a revolution led by head of the nobles, Mohammed bin Mustafa Effendi al-Husseini, who played a significant role in the emergence of Jerusalem's most powerful and influential families, which later controlled the reins of power in the city, including the important jobs and positions that influenced the social and economic aspects throughout and beyond this era. The study investigates that revolution in terms of its causes, development, conclusion, and impact, including the emergence of influential families (local elites) in Jerusalem. The study discusses the population in terms of their demographic distribution throughout the city, and their role in the mutual relations between the various religious communities of Muslims, Christians and Jews, highlighting the roles of these communities in the city. The study explores the conditions of the Jerusalemite families during that era in terms of their role in the formation of the community, the family average size, surnames, and the role of women in society, as protectors of themselves and their children. The study also contains information about inheritance and real estates, houses, marriage, divorce, holidays, and social events, and it addresses people's customs, their cultural life and Jerusalem's libraries, which contributed to the evolution of scientific and cultural life of the community, as well as schools, and various places of worship, such as zawayah, khawaniq, and arbitah. The study also addresses land ownership and divisions in the city, sizes of farms and gardens, endowed property and related jobs, and methods of utilizing such property, by means of various leasing contracts, such as al-khulu (sale of concession), al-'istibdal (exchange of waqf property), hikr (long-term rental of waqf property), ijara (leasing) muqata'a (crop sharing). Finally, the study investigates the economic situation in detail during that era, starting from the factors of the economy, passing through the methods of land exploitation, agriculture, industry, commerce, professional and handicraft communities, currency, and ending with scales, weights, and prices.
